MLK Day 2020

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

KID Museum celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday offsite at the Montgomery County 2020 Day of Service and at the museum, with dynamic, MLK Day themed activities. At the County event, held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, thousands of people of all ages came to take part in service projects and learn about what they can do to make a difference in our community. KID Museum’s activity, “Our Community, Our World,” invited families to contribute to a collaborative art installation that celebrates the many cultures that make up Montgomery County and the shared community we create. By the end of the day, hundreds of kids and parents had contributed to create a multicolored mosaic wall, full of colorful fabrics representing countries from around the world.

Meanwhile, at KID Museum, over 600 people engaged in MLK Day themed activities; making felt peace pins, building a model all-inclusive playground, and screen printing their own “I Have a Dream” posters. In the MLK Reflection Room, families listened to Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speeches and posted hand-written reflections on the museum’s MLK Mosaic Mirror, including “believe in peace,” “respect,” “kindness” — all great values to live by.
