We’re always looking for passionate volunteers to help us further our mission. Currently, KID is prioritizing Program Volunteers for our Sunday Open Explore family programming.

Program Volunteer

Program Volunteers assist with our maker-based learning experiences and visitor services operations working alongside Maker Educators, high school volunteers, and Operations staff. Volunteers should have a strong interest in working with children and families and be comfortable working in an active environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome guests and assist them in hands-on, maker-based activities 
  • Initiate conversations with visitors in the Museum’s studios, using the provided activities to spark new questions and ideas.
  • Set up and breakdown of activity materials and stations.
  • Provide a welcoming environment for guests of all ages that supports KID Museum’s inquiry-based pedagogy.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older (High school students can apply to our Teen Volunteer program).
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must be vaccinated for COVID-19.
  • Must attend and complete all required training.
  • Volunteer a minimum of ~8 hours a month for a minimum of 6 months.
    • Sunday shifts are 9 AM – 1 PM or 12 PM – 4:15 PM at 3 Bethesda Metro Center in the heart of downtown Bethesda.
  • Experience or interest in working with children ages 4 to 14.
  • Comfortable working with large crowds and in loud spaces.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to be flexible and self-sufficient in changing environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills
    • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public.
    • Fluency in Spanish and other non-English languages as a plus.

Teen Volunteers

Are you interested in working with kids or pursuing a career in education? KID’s high school volunteers help us run Sunday Open Explore programs, Summer Camps, and other offerings for young children and the family audience. We’re always looking for enthusiastic teens to help us bring our programs to life!

  • Have excellent communication skills—and are comfortable initiating conversations with children and visitors
  • Genuinely enjoy working with children and can keep them engaged, excited, and safe.
  • Responsible, self‑directed volunteers who arrive on time, stay focused, and bring their best every day

How to Become a Teen Volunteer

Prospective volunteers must:

  • Submit an application;
  • Participate in an interview;
  • Complete training prior to volunteering;
  • Be able to hit the required time commitments

Important Dates

  • Application Due Date: Thursday, March 19th at 5:00pm
  • Virtual Group Interviews: Tuesday, March 23 – Thursday, March 27 (30 minute group interviews) 
  • Onsite Training: Mid May (exact date TBD)
