KID Museum’s newest program with MCPS gives 3rd graders an in-depth introduction to robotics and coding. Beyond learning how to design and build a robot that can perform simple tasks, students also discover how physical computing can serve as a tool for solving problems and as a vehicle for creative expression.
The program, called “What is a Robot?,” includes three visits to KID Museum and two classroom sessions co-taught by KID Museum maker educators and MCPS teachers. At the end of the program, students present their projects at a showcase event at their school. Teachers also attend two professional development sessions at KID Museum to enhance their skills and confidence in presenting the curriculum.
The program was successfully piloted at two Title I elementary schools in 2018: Sargent Shriver and Kemp Mill, both in Silver Spring. KID Museum is now working with MCPS to expand the program in the 2019-20 school year.
