Be a KID this summer!

Build a giant dunk machine, hack a toy, create a working pinball machine, or conjure up some Harry Potter-style magic. Whichever camp you choose, KID Museum will make it a summer of fun and invention. Dive in and discover what you can make!

2nd – 4th Grade | KID Arcade | FULL

Make your own versions of classic arcade games like pinball, skee-ball, and foosball. Build larger, collaborative projects and work with the group to turn KID Museum into the coolest arcade ever! Featuring favorites from our past arcade camp, plus many more new projects.

5th – 7th Grade | Toy Hackers | FULL

Give used toys a second life – we’ll open them up, harvest parts, hack controllers, and bend circuits to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces that move and make custom sounds.

6th – 9th Grade | Community KIDs | FULL

Make a difference in your community while earning SSL hours. Travel to a different organization each day: assemble sandwiches for Bethesda Cares; make dog toys for the Washington Humane Society; mulch trails at the Audubon Naturalist Society, and more. Be a part of a team, help those in need, gain valuable work experience–and have a great time! Please note this camp is held from 8:30am – 3:00pm.

2nd – 4th Grade | Maker Fun in the Sun | FULL

Celebrate the season with all new summer-themed maker projects. Create solar-powered fan cars, bubble machines, and a giant dunk-station… what better way to beat the heat than to cool down at KID!

5th – 7th Grade | Design-It | FULL

Discover your inner engineer this summer! Learn maker skills such as programming Arduino boards, creating analog circuits, wielding power tools, and more. Use these skills to design, develop, and build innovative solutions to a series of challenges.

Week 3: July 16-20

2nd – 4th Grade | Inventioneering | FULL

Tap into your inner inventor to solve engineering challenges. Your problem solving skills will be put to the test as you design an earthquake-proof building, build a weight-bearing bridge, and tackle city planning.

5th – 7th Grade | Wearable Gadgets | FULL

Create “smart” electronic-embedded clothing that you can interact with and control. Learn basic sewing, circuitry and programming while designing and making your wearable gadgets. 5th – 7th Grade | Strategy Board Games: Fab Lab Edition | FULL

Calling all game heads! If you love Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne, or if you gravitate toward chess, checkers and backgammon, this is the camp for you. In this camp we will explore board game strategy and design, and then using 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing and digital graphic design, we will create our own custom versions of these games.

Week 5: July 30 - August 3

2nd – 4th Grade | Around the World | FULL

Visit a different country each day! Gain skills in woodshop, electronics and textiles while making projects inspired by cultures around the world: Mexican sugar skulls, Chinese hacky sack games, Dutch windmill models, and much more. The week will culminate in a culture expo for family and friends.

5th – 7th Grade | Video Game Design | FULL

This is an advanced game making class using Scratch, where you’ll learn the high level coding that goes into your favorite video games. Throughout the week we’ll be making every step of the game, from the characters to the controllers! Students will be using Scratch, Makey Makey, wood and art materials to put the game together. Prior knowledge of Scratch is helpful, but not required. Pre-register here to purchase a Makey Makey at a reduced rate. Makey Makey is not included with the price of the camp; controller will not work without a Makey Makey, but the video game can still be played using a computer keyboard.

Art, engineering, technology, physics… this camp has it all! Make your own working pinball machine and along the way, learn to use power tools, try 3D design and printing, and power things up with circuits. Use your new skills to design and build the coolest pinball machine you’ve ever seen.

Week 7: August 13-17

2nd – 4th Grade | Harry Potter Camp | FULL

Leave the Muggle World behind and experience a bit of Harry Potter-inspired magic. Create interactive wands, quills and chocolate frog molds. Make quidditch equipment to use with fellow campers, practice dueling and experiment with potions. We’ve kept the old favorites from our half-day camp, and have added many more new projects for this full day of wizardry.

5th – 7th Grade | Mini-Movie Makers | FULL

Use KID’s green screen stage to produce your own mini-movie. Take your miniature characters around the world with the use of stop-motion animation and green screen technology. Build a set for your mini-characters and design costumes for them in our textiles lab. Create Foley sound effects using everyday materials, and learn how basic special effects can create some real movie magic.

Week 8: August 20-24

2nd – 4th Grade | Music Makers | FULL

Explore music like never before! Learn about how sound is produced and different pitches are achieved while making your own instruments to play. Campers will develop their woodworking and electronics skills as they create electronic, melodic, and percussive instruments, including: bamboo flutes, circuit tunes, and much more!

August Daily Camps

During the last week of August, KID Museum will have three days of daily camps with a different theme each day. Attend one day, or attend them all!

Tuesday, August 28

2nd – 4th Grade | Aeronautica | FULL

4, 3, 2, 1… lift off! Leave the ground behind in this camp that’s all about flying, launching, and falling. Build and launch different types of flying creations that function in different ways, including bike pump rockets, pool noodle rockets, and launching propellers.

2nd – 4th Grade | Jurassic KIDs | FULL

Drill deep into the world of dinosaurs through making: create a live dinosaur habitat, make fossil casts and skeletons, and build a lumberyard dino.

5th – 7th Grade | Maker Camp: Textiles & Electronics

Explore our Textiles and Electronics Maker Studios. Explore both circuits and sewing while learning about inputs and outputs and incorporating snaps and buttons in an electric textiles creation.

2nd – 4th Grade | Freaky Flowers | FULL

This is no garden-variety camp. Learn maker skills as you create wooden spin wheels, electric party flowers, chia pet sculptures and bird feeders.

Take a deep dive this August, and harness the power of water. Explore hydrodynamics by creating super soakers, mister mazes, giant bubbles and water rockets.

Extended Day Registration

For each week of on-site Summer Camp, you have the opportunity to extend your child’s day at KID for an hour. This is available for all of our full week camps, except Community KIDs. Weekly fee: $75
