Last April, KID Museum teamed up with IFI, the creators of HEXBUGS, to create the Toy 2.0 Challenge. We asked kids between the ages of 10 and 18 to come up with their idea for the next hot toy, with the chance for their design to be manufactured and brought to market by IFI.
Of the over 60 designs submitted, ten were chosen as semi-finalists. Judges (experts in robotics, aerodynamics, and design) made selections based on originality, marketability and elegance of design.
Under the guidance of KID Museum mentors, the semi-finalists spent the last five months developing prototypes of their toy inventions.
Their hard work paid off. At Maker Faire Silver Spring, festival attendees had the chance to see these amazing prototypes first-hand–and vote for their favorite. The inventors gave demos and presented their concepts on stage. Official Toy 2.0 Challenge judges voted anonymously during Maker Faire, and final winners were announced at the end of the day.
Congratulations to Stephanie and Elizabeth Vicarte, Chandler Wimmer, Sebastien Sviatyi, and Miranda McMillen!
And congratulations to all of the Toy 2.0 Challenge semi-finalists for their inspiring toy inventions.
